ATHENS, Ga. - Middle Tennessee began the fall 2008 season with a number of wins at the 2008 Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.

Sophomore John Peers began the tournament with a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Tennessee Tech's Dean O'Brien.
Also in Division I singles, senior Morgan Richard defeated Yoann Re of Virginia Tech 6-2, 6-1, after losing to him when the two faced last March.
Sophomore Richard Cowden also performed well for the Blue Raiders as he defeated Alex Hill of tournament host Georgia 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Alex McCann lost his first match of the tournament 6-2, 6-4 to Carlos Salmon of Wake Forest, who is seeded 64th in the Division II round.
Sophomore Kyle Wishing fell to Wake Forest's David Hopkins 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Peers and Cowden defeated Mortiz Bernhoerster and Jeff Archer of Charlotte 8-2. Wishing and McCann won their match 8-1 over Lander's Gary Bertoldo and Juan Manrique.
The Blue Raiders will continue play at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday, Sept. 20.
