MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee senior center Theryn Hudson underwent surgery for an existing foot injury Wednesday afternoon and will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks during the preseason, according to head coach Kermit Davis.
The surgery was conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Herring, a member of Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance who specializes in orthopaedic surgery with an emphasis on foot and ankle surgery. He served as the Tennessee Titans team doctor from 1997-2003.
Hudson had suffered a partial tear of the tendon in his right foot - the same injury that forced the rising senior to miss three weeks of last season, according to head athletic trainer Drew Shea.
"Dr. Michael Jordan referred us to Dr. Herring, who really specializes in this area," Davis said. "Dr. Herring said the surgery was a definite success. There was ligament damage. Theryn is in a cast and the recovery process is six-to-eight weeks but this surgery should definitely enable Theryn to play pain free and enjoy a very successful senior season."
Hudson's anticipated return to the court will be Nov. 10 depending on his rehabilitation. Surgery was initially discussed during the spring but as the injury appeared to be healing other options were explored.
"Theryn missed three weeks with the foot injury last season but he came back and showed a lot of toughness and finished the year," Davis said. "Surgery was something that was discussed in the spring but it is the last thing you want to do. Theryn went through some good times in the summer but at the end of the summer there was reoccurring pain. With the suggestion of (Shea) we tried rest but it wasn't getting any better and the determination was made that Theryn needed surgery."
Hudson's career 60.5 field goal percentage is second all-time at Middle Tennessee. He led the Sun Belt with a personal-best 64.7 field goal percentage in 2007-08, which is fourth on the Middle Tennessee single-season list. He came back from his foot injury last season to shoot 74 percent over the last 12 games and he was 7-of-8 for a career-high 19 points and team-best eight rebounds in Middle Tennessee's first-round win against Louisiana-Monroe in the Sun Belt Conference championships.
