Five-run fifth inning gives Netherlands first win in Beijing

BEIJING - The Netherlands and former Blue Raider baseball player Tjerk Smeets defeated China 6-4 in its first win of the 2008 Olympic games.

China out hit the Netherlands 11 to 9 but five runs in the fifth inning helped give the Netherlands the win.

Smeets did not see any action in the second preliminary game for the Netherlands but his teammates Yurendall de Castor and Sharnol Adriana each recorded two hits and scored three runs between them. Sidney de Jong had three RBI after hitting a three-run home run during the fifth inning.

The Netherlands also had three doubles in the game with one being hit by Adriana.

The Netherlands will be back in action on Monday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. Beijing time and 5 a.m. CDT on Monday, Aug. 18.

All baseball games during the Olympics will be held at the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center Baseball Field or one of the two competition fields surrounding the complex.
