Netherlands fall to Japan
Team faces China on Saturday

BEIJING - The Netherlands and former Blue Raider baseball player Tjerk Smeets fell to Japan 6-0 in the third preliminary game of the Olympics.

The Netherlands posted four hits on the day compared to its second preliminary game where it only had one. Yurendell de Caster's double was the first extra base hit for the Netherlands in the preliminary games.

Smeets did not see any action in the third preliminary game for the Netherlands but will have another chance when the team faces China on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. Beijing time and 5 a.m. CDT on Saturday, Aug. 16.

All baseball games during the Olympics will be held at the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center Baseball Field or one of the two competition fields surrounding the complex.

Recently, Smeets was featured in a Sports Illustrated.com article which discusses his road to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
