MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Former Middle Tennessee All-American Fred Niemeyer lost in the first round in both singles and doubles in tennis action at the Beijing Olympics, retiring because of injury in singles and dropping a three-set decision in doubles.
Niemeyer pulled out of his singles match on Sunday against Argentina's Guillermo Canas because of an elbow injury. He won the first set, 6-3, and was down, 2-4, in the second set before retiring.
Niemeyer and Daniel Nestor won the first set in doubles on Monday against Great Britain's Andy and Jamie Murray, but the Brits won the final two sets to eliminate Canada's doubles tandem.
