Former All-American needs one more victory to advance to next week's main draw at Wimbledon
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Former Middle Tennessee All-American Fred Niemeyer won his second consecutive match in straight sets Tuesday in qualifying for next week's Championships at Wimbledon. Neimeyer can reach the main draw for the fourth time in his career with a best-of-five set match versus South Africa's Izak Van der Merwe on Wednesday.
Niemeyer defeated Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-3, on Tuesday. He won 6-2, 7-5, over Israel's 27th-seeded Harel Levy on Monday in the opening round of qualifying.
Niemeyer has played in The Championships at Wimbledon three previous times, once in singles in 2003, a year in which he also made it through the three-round qualifying tournament, and in doubles in 2005 and 2006.
The Magog, Quebec, Canada, native defeated 17th-ranked and 22nd-seeded Felix Mantilla in the first round of the main draw of 2003, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (3). Niemeyer lost in the second round to Wesley Moodie.
