MURFREEBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee junior Jordan Alvis has signed with the Seattle Mariners after being selected in the 21st round in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.

Alvis was the 642nd overall pick by the Mariners in the draft and has signed a contract with the team. Under the contract, the Mariners hold his playing rights for six years and will pay for Alvis to finish school once he is done playing.

"It is a great opportunity and I am really excited about it. The Mariners are a great organization. I want to thank all of the coaches for helping me. They have done everything they could to help me and I really appreciate it," Alvis said.

Alvis will leave later this week for Pulaski, Va., where he will begin his career in short-season A with the Pulaski Mariners.

"It is a dream come true. We talked about this when Jordan first enrolled in school here. Obviously Jordan is far from reaching his potential and we hope that takes place on the professional level. He has all of the physical tools to advance in baseball," head coach Steve Peterson said.

During the 2008 season, Alvis posted a 6-2 record in 48.1 innings of work. Alvis made 18 appearances with seven starts with 25 strikeouts. Batters hit .330 against him as he posted an 8.75 ERA.

"Jordan is a very solid student and has great pride in his academics especially the aerospace program. He is determined to succeed on the professional level and return to Middle Tennessee State University to receive his aerospace degree. He has the chance to have the best of both worlds," Peterson said.

The Pulaski Mariners begin their season on Tuesday, June 17 in Princeton, W. Va. at 7 p.m. in the first of a three-game series with the Princeton Devil Rays.
