MURFREEBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee junior Jordan Alvis was selected in the 21st round by the Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.

Alvis was the 642nd overall pick by the Mariners on Friday afternoon.

"He has all of the tools, in physical size, arm strength and athleticism that pro baseball is looking for. Jordan has not put everything together on the field but has all the tools to do so and the Mariners are right on in seeing his potential," head coach Steve Peterson said.

During the 2008 season, Alvis posted a 6-2 record in 48.1 innings of work. Alvis made 18 appearances with seven starts with 25 strikeouts. Batters hit .330 against him as he posted an 8.75 ERA.

Alvis is the first Blue Raiders' pitcher to be selected in the major league draft since Chris Mobley was taken by the Florida Marlins in 2004.
