MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Freshman Krystle Horton led all scorers with 23 points as the Middle Tennessee women's basketball team defeated Georgia College and State University 69-46 in an exhibition game Tuesday in the Murphy Center. Horton, a freshman forward from Riverdale High School, recorded a double-double as she also recorded 10 doubles. She also had three steals, one assist and one block.
Middle Tennessee opened the game slow and allowed Georgia College to take a 7-6 led to start the game before a jumper by junior guard Patrice Holmes at the 13:21 mark put the Lady Raiders up by one, 8-7. Georgia College took the lead one more time in the contest, 9-8, but Horton scored on a jumper to make it 11-9 and the Lady Raiders never relinquished the lead again.
Sophomore Tia Stovall was second on the team in scoring with 14 points and also had six rebounds. Keisha McClinic had 11 points and three assists and was also 2-of-3 from the three-point line.
Overall the Lady Raiders shot 46 percent from the field and grabbed 44 rebounds in the contest. Middle Tennessee held Georgia College to 29 percent shooting from the field and forced 30 turnovers in the game.
The Lady Raiders host Tennessee Tech Friday November 21 at 7 p.m. in their season- opener at the Murphy Center.
MT Forward Krystle Horton: "Coming into it I was kind of nervous, but after the jump ball I got into the flow of the game and tried to do my best."
MT Forward Tia Stovall: "It was hard sitting the last 15 minutes of the first half. I knew I had to come back and make things happen in the first half." "Krystle [Horton] is going to help bring dominance to our post play when conference play comes around. When I have the ball, I know where she is. When she has the ball, she knows where I am at all times. Krystle is one of the best post players I have played with."
MT Head Coach Stephany Smith: "I think the promises are what is to come, not what is here. [Krystle Horton] had the best all around performance. I was disappointed with our overall effort. We just didn't play with any energy. We didn't even reverse the ball one time. We are an athletic team. Instead of that being to our advantage, it is our demise. I thought we were farther along than where we are."
